On some of our volunteer days, we were joined by George (Geordie) Haugh, who once had a stall selling hand tools on Kendal market. He and Walter spent most of the day nattering away,  which was most entertaining for the volunteers and very informative when it came to cataloguing and provenancing.

Here Walter explains the uses a side axe, describes the process of forging and ‘tempering’ the blade, and points out the benefits of adding value through hand craftsmanship!
